On a sunny July afternoon in 2007, 2-year-old Ian and his mother, Meilani, wandered into a mysterious retail space in Bethany Village filled with (mostly empty) bookshelves, computers, and startup collection of books, DVDs, and CDs. The new Bethany Branch of the Cedar Mill Community Library hadn’t officially opened yet, but with all systems up and running, the staff decided to take on the library’s first ever patron. Since that momentous first checkout of a Thomas & Friends picture book, Ian has grown up enjoying the library and still visits us frequently. Staff will often remind him of his important part in our humble history.
When I caught up with the now 7-year-old recently on a busy Sunday afternoon in the children’s area, he was in the middle of re-reading one of his favorite books, Oops! by Jean-Luc Fromental and Joelle Jolivet, which he would highly recommend.
