Straight out of the box: this one’s for the cat people

My friend Steve likes cats. People are always saying ‘Oh, Steve’s really a cat person’. No he’s not. If Steve were a cat person it’d be, like, ‘Hey, Steve never goes in the pool’. –Demetri Martin

Hey there, cat people! You know who you are. These are for you.  Enjoy!

I could pee on this and other poems by cats by Francesoc Marciuliano.  Via comic strip author Marciuliano, several cats express themselves on the topics that are most important to them- food, naps, laps and… more naps. Styles range from free verse to haiku:

Sushi

Did you really think  /  That you could hide fish in rice?  /  Oh, the green paste burns!

How to tell if your cat is plotting to kill you by The Oatmeal.  From the webcomic theoatmeal.com. Besides the hilarious titular strip deciphering some of your cat’s more enigmatic behaviors, this book also includes the adventures of the Bobcats- those tie-wearing office cats who are so fond of coffee and laser pointers; the classic “Cat vs Internet”; and an informative guide to how kittens are going to take over the world.

Simon’s Cat and Simon’s Cat: Beyond the Fence by Simon Tofield; Cat Getting Out of a Bag and Other Observations by Jeffrey Brown; Chi’s Sweet Home (series) by Kanata Konami—More comic strip takes on the human-cat dynamic. Tofield’s cat is almost Chaplinesque in his silent way of getting into and out of ridiculous scrapes. Brown’s comics are funny, poignant, and dead-on accurate. (Yeah, what is it with cats’ compulsion to sit on paper, even if it is just one tiny post-it on a vast floor?) Konami uses the manga genre to achieve maximum cuteness in this portrayal of a kitten named Chi learning about the big wide world.

From the YouTube sensation directly to your coffee table: I am Maru = Maru desu by Mogumogu.

Knit your own cat: easy to follow patterns for 16 frisky felines by Sally Muir. When I emailed my friend and fellow cat person Amy about this book, she replied, “I wish I could knit. I would knit you a cat. I WOULD KNIT EVERYONE CATS.” So, library fans, the holidays are coming up. Who will knit us a cat?
