In a long waited follow-up to autobiographic novel Fun Home, Alison Bechdel tells the story of her mother this time. In 2007′s Fun Home, Bechdel told/drew the tale of her family centering around her closeted father who ends up committing suicide. After decades of therapy, Bechdel quite bravely shares her insight into her own psyche and the influence her mother has had in her development. Yes, it is very psychoanalytical and Freudian, but when delivered in the graphic novel form, it does alleviate a little bit of the heaviness such topics can bear. What I found most interesting about Are You My Mother? is that Bechdel aligned her personal tale with Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse. If you liked Fun Home and don’t mind getting a little personal, I think this graphic novel is for you.
