Off the Shelf: new graphic novels for early 2013

buildingWe’ve added several interesting graphic novels to our adult collection recently.  Here are a few standouts.

Building Stories – Chris Ware
Chris Ware topped many “best of 2012″ lists with his gigantic collection of comics called Building Stories.  This box collects 14 separate comic pieces that tell the stories of various people in one building.  It’s a marvel to look at and it’s certainly not something you can find with an ebook.

Activity – Nathan Edmondson
Ever wonder if there are even more secretive elements to our intelligence aparatus here in the US other than Delta Force or SEAL teams?  Here’s a possible answer in this graphic novel series about a Special Ops team dedicated to cleaning up unique messes.

Rohan at the Louvre - Hirohiko Araki
The Louvre continues its effort to create interest in it’s artwork by commissioning another graphic novel that features some of it’s holdings.  This time, the focus is on manga and a cursed 200 year old painting.

Bad Medicine - Nunzio DeFilippis
Eccentric doctor Randal Horne must help the NYPD investigate mysterious science and medicine in an effort to manage a medical world swiftly spinning out of control.

Initiates: a comic artist and a wine artisan exchange jobs by Etienne Davodeau
I have to admit, I’ve never wondered what it would look like if a comic artist and a wine artisan switched places but I’m sure curious what that would look like after hearing about this book.  Find out here.

New Deadwardians by Dan Abnett
Abnett imagines an alternate Victorian England where zombies have overwhelmed the civilized world and the only way to combat them is to accept the curse of vampirism.  This is what many of the Aristocracy, the government and police force have done.  One of these vampires is Chief Inspector George Suttle, who must solve a mystery in the middle of this simmering vampire/zombie war.
